I decided last week to go out and water my flowers - before it was dark out. Just to be careful I decided if I brought the dogs with me they would protect me if the skunks decided to come out and for sure if the skunks saw the dogs they wouldn't dare come out, right? WRONG AGAIN!!!
As the dogs and I started to go outside I barely caught something fluffy out of the corner of my eye and yelled for the dogs to come back since they hadn't seen this fluffy furball yet and as my dogs started back my way, they too saw "it" out of the corner of their eyes and decided they had to investigate this ugly thing on their property, as they started to run towards it, I started screaming louder than I ever had before.. only because I knew that if they didn't listen we'd all be in for it and sure enough, they DIDN'T LISTEN!
So I ran to get Michael who for some reason heard none of this?! I went back outside to see where this skunk had gone and the little furball started to fun toward me, I took off screaming in fear that if it got close enough it would spray me too, but I later found out that they cant spray again for 10 minutes or about. So our black lab got sprayed in the eyes, we or should I say Michael worried and started dumping water on her to at least clean her eyes, then he cleaned her a few times in tomato juice and a few times with dog shampoo and she still smelled disgusting. In the mean time I'm hiding in side to get away from the smell and you know what? It smelled worse inside then it did outside. I just figured the smell was seeping in the air conditioner vents or thru the cracks in the window seal and the smell started making me sick so finally I realized that our other dog was looking like she had done something wrong and so I decided to go and smell her and are you kidding me? She had been sprayed too and we we're so caught up with helping the other dog that she managed to sneak past us. So after that we put both dogs outside and made them sleep out there, the next day I had to wash them in a solution of - Dawn Dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. I washed them with this mixture about six times each and then washed them with dog conditioner probably three times each after they dried we let them come back inside of the house [[the smell was just about gone]] The temperature outside was 105, so we could't make them stay outside any longer as if they hadn't suffered enough already anyways..poor dogs!
So the next day we did call someone to come and remove them. The guy came and set up two cages, so I though for sure we would catch these smelly things and sure enough, NOTHING!!! we've had the cages set up for four days now and still nothing, either they've left since seeing the dogs or they're really smart and we're just wasting money trying. So not only did our house smell so unbelievably disgusting [[like a mixture of burnt rubber, rotten onions and garlic mixed]] but both of "our girls" - the dogs, Roxy and Kirra got sprayed by a skunk and it wasn't even full grown it was a baby! Things are finally back to normal and the smell is gone..=)
